How did that happen anyways?
There was hesitation, a second thought. Picking up the keys twisting and turning them in my hands, thoughts flowing through my mind “Should I? Shouldn’t I?” Making a choice and then change my mind. In the long run my initial intuition was correct, but I won’t find out till later.
After bring out the recyclable waste, perfectly placing it in a particular matter, largest to smallest, the moon creates long dark shadows that stretch across the dry burnt lawn.
I proceeding to walk down the driveway driven by a desire to see more, the street is lighten up by the moons bright glow, the air is fresh with suburbia. To the end of the street at the hill in the park I stand, the moon shines in the sky above, like a spotlight it’s always pointing at me. Everything is calm; the sky is almost clear, sparse collections of clouds pass by in shapes and patterns left to the imagination.
Staring at the moon it’s a wonder I am here. What are the odds that a planet like this and a body like mine could exist? So perfectly matched for each other in logical ways - science can prove nothing but is to be trusted without excuse, such a paradox. Life is great having everything I need, eyes to see, ears to hear, five senses working together, a perfect moment in all senses of the world.
Walking back to my house the moon continues to follow me, once again the thought of a spotlight fills my mind, and the idea evolves. Looking towards the camera I see a face, my reflection? Through the lens a face pear back at me, it’s not too different from my own. This illusion is one of many, after blinking I can no longer find myself in all the possibilities. A skunk rushes across the street, tail in the air ready to spray at the slightest commotion ‘good evening comrade’.
Approaching the driveway, I pass the recycling bins still standing in honour, taking a seat and staring at the sky - trees, houses and clouds cover most of my view. Thoughts flowing through my mind, the insights come in waves.
I’m reminded of Adia’s words “Cause and effect, my love” confused I raised my shoulders, shrugging she says “It’s from ‘The Matrix.’” “The matrix… I don’t remember that!?!?” It couldn’t have been in the first movie, but it’s been a long time and memory is a fickle thing. She’s right, it’s all cause and effect -everything fits together too perfectly for there to be anything else.
The insights were coming from the experiences of the week, where the initial needs had been set. Solutions had to be discovered, it was all coming together and I knew exactly what had to be done. The insights continued, so did my understanding. The experiences had come after the thoughts of what was needed had been discovered, it all fit together perfectly.
‘How do you get people to a website?’ I had wondered. There were so many ‘ways’ out there but they all had a price, and for the most part were scams. I’d come to the realization that I had to do it myself -unique solutions require unique situations - it had to be different in order to work.
Opening the door and stepping inside, knowing what had to done the plans kept flow through my mind. Stepping into the kitchen my mind wanders off into new experiences, looking around the kitchen I pull at the refrigerator door and then the freezer. The dishwasher is clean and it should be emptied, it would only take five minutes. Catching myself off track I need focus, I remember the task at hand, grabbing a glass and filling it with water the apprehension is complete.
Glass in one hand a jug of water in the other I head to the living room, a Toshiba laptop is plugged in and ready to go, emptying my hands and taking a seat I Leaning back on the couch. I know what I have to do; hands on the keyboard my fingers do all the work.
We are sitting outside on the patio, around the corner someone is singing, he’s butchering Bob Marley. Across the table Berk takes a gulp of his enormous beer and laughs “I`ve had more to drink this week then I have had in the last four months combined! “ It’s a tradition when someone is going away for a while, in Berk’s case at least five years, to have some drinks. A few weeks earlier he had decided to travel across the country to get his graduate degree. He was taking a huge step into a new life, earlier in the night he had said “I need a change, I’ve been here all of my life, it’s time for something new. “
I overhear Khaliq talking about his novel, turning in his directions I listen closer. “I finished writing it. It`s about 125 pages.. I have sent it to an editor” wanting to know more I ask “What are you going to do when it’s done?” I can tell by his determination that he has a plan “Get an initial pressing of 100 copies then see where it goes from there.” He has a business plan, it’s set to go - need, idea, plan, action. He intends to build a children’s entertainment empire, this is the first step.
I say “I hope I’m rich one day” Leroy sits across from Khaliq, he chuckles a little then says “I don’t hope to be rich, I know I will be” Laughing a little my mind realizes he`s right, perspective is nine tenths of reality or was that the law? Speaking of money I say “The internet is where it`s at! In 2006 Facebook made 60 million dollars.” We keep up with the money talk; Leroy says “I want a job where I can sit on the beach with a laptop, maybe somewhere like Grand Cayman.” It turns out he’s applied for a banking job in the Caribbean.
Kicking something under the table I realize it`s Cassandra`s shoe, she’s always taking them off, they must be uncomfortable or something. Without a plan I pick up one and pretend to throw it over the fence, she sighs but doesn’t thinking I’ll do it. Heads turn, a moment passes and my hand swings forward releasing the shoe, throwing it over the fence, Cassandra is surprised and starts to laugh, everyone is in awe. You jerk.
A sense of regret comes over me; I get out of my chair to return the shoe, upon arrival I decide to throw it further. Seeing this Cassandra gets out of her chair and heads towards me, Dierk follows, he’s faster and catches up first. On the other side of the road I pretend to throw the shoe over another fence then secretly place it in my back pocket. Dierk plays along and Cassandra follows. On the other side of the fence lies a cemetery, they run around the dead looking for the nonexistent shoe.
Returning to my seat I find Adil drinking a pint of Creemore, it’s his new favourite beer, ironically it’s in a Labatt’s Blue glass, head files a fifth of it. Everyone is getting up and are intent on leaving. Looking at the time its half past eleven, and some of us have to get up for work in the morning. Inside bills are being paid with debit cards, heading though the restaurant it is empty, a fire place burns in the corner.
Out front we gather in a circle, Cassandra is teary eyed, she doesn’t want Berk to leave quite yet, we continue to talk and joke around. To my left stands William, he’s talking to Dierk about investments; they are both into mineral stocks “If one of these companies makes a find the stock will skyrocket. We’ll be rich”. Just last week the stock market nearly crashed, it had something to do with sub-prime lending. Just what America needs, thousands of defaulting loans and the banks running out of cash. I wonder what it would be like to going to a bank that has no money?
It’s getting late, everyone says there last goodbyes. While walking across the parking lot I catch a word with Leon and Abbey. Leon has a new set of keys in his hand, the key is small but the handle is not, it bears a prominent logo “You get a NEW car?” Looking across the parking lot I spot a shinny navy blue Volkswagen. His car is at the other end of the parking lot, mine is here, we say good bye.
Heading back across town we talk about Vancouver, Berk says we are all welcome to visit whenever we want. Dierk asks “How does it feel to finally be leave Ajax?” we all laugh looking forward to our days; living in the suburbs is such a drag. Before long we reach his house, stopping in the driveway we joke around a little more. Shaking hands Berk says “See you later!” as if he were only going for a week. Opening the door he gets out and heads towards the house.
Pulling out of the driveway I say “Things are going to be different without Berk.”

NOTE: This is not the next chapter (that will come next week); this is another short story like “Last Day In Mexico.” This is real time evolution of Novelog.
